City Of Dis - Biography

Biography

City of Dis was formed in 2013 in Boston, MA by Bryan Hassell on guitar/vocals and James Cooper on drums. A year later, Kevin Ronan and Juan Pablo Blanco filled in the lineup on lead guitar and bass, respectively. The band slowly developed a sound that combined their varied influences, from progressive rock and metal, grunge, and sludge. Developing this sound by playing live all over Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York, the band has continued to hone their craft and create a unique take on progressive metal. After a few years of songwriting and testing that material live, they self-produced and self-released their debut EP, A Flawed Design, in 2017.

After the release of their first record, City of Dis continued to push their music into heavier territory. The band also started to introduce a more varied vocal approach with the addition of harsh vocals into the mix. The three-vocalist approach of Bryan, James and Juan Pablo has allowed the band to expand their sound vocally. Though interrupted by the pandemic, the band continued working on their follow up to A Flawed Design and in 2022 released their second album, titled Alterity. This album was a culmination of years of intense songwriting and song crafting, capturing the breadth of sound the band was able to produce while remaining focused and cohesive. Heavier songs like Alterity and Through Purgatory, which the band released music videos for, were balanced out with more melodic pieces like The Golden Path and Distal.

City of Dis is now working on the follow up to Alterity, pushing their sound to even heavier territories while retaining the core of their progressive metal sound. This new batch of songs brings into their sound influences from post-metal, including more texture and atmosphere while retaining City of Dis’ driving sound. They continue to perform live throughout the Northeast and keep building on what they have been creating for almost a decade.
